Running saved this man's life... Sunday October 26, 2014

As we know from Mary's blog last week, exercise isn't for everyone, and if you're going through a depressive episode, is not only probably the last thing on your mind, but may feel like a physical impossibility.

For Simon Lamb though, a bipolar sufferer, running saved his life. Hear what he has to say.

In my journey since my bipolar diagnosis in 1992, I have found that several things contribute to my well-being, and each is important at its instance in time.

I joined a Taoist Tai Chi class, and I found it to be play rather than work. This was good because all the workouts I was doing were no more than that: work. I couldn't make myself continue because it seemed pointless and left me exhausted. But when I go to Tai Chi, I leave each class with a spring in my step and a smile on my lips, a light heart, and a body that feels good. My balance is much better with each practice, no matter how little, and I can squat without hurting my legs or ankles.

I find it important to find some physical activity I can enjoy. That helps me keep going. Tai Chi is the thing I like, and it feels like play, even though after an hour and a half I'm sweating like a horse! Enjoying what I do helps pull me through the dark times, especially when I decide to do things I know I once enjoyed.

I should say that there are times when I don't enjoy things I have enjoyed before. But I try to do them anyway at least a little bit because it kind of reminds me what I did enjoy doing. Like training my body to remember moves, I train my brain to remember the enjoyment of favorite pastimes.

There is nothing more wonderful for a sufferer of any mental illness than to hear another sufferer describing both their journey, good and bad, and their own personal acceptance and path. Thank you Caroline, this is brilliant! I've just added him to my list of people I'm a little bit in love with. This is in a 'full of admiration' way not the 'total stalker' way :-)

I thank God that I do not suffer personally from mental illness, but I know quite a few people who do and feel for their situation. I take my hat off to Simon for telling his story and helping so many by doing so. I shall send him healing as that is something I am good at.

I get out of breath just watching this, but am so glad it works for him! And that the Tai Chi works for Ginnyjollykidd. My family did skiing with me last weekend. I hate the fact that you do tend to feel good after exercise. Still doesn't make me love it though!

Evem a good walk with my dogs helps me...... especially if sunny and warm out My mind ewmains in kind of a blur but gets rid of anxiety and edginess...Dave b

What a wonderful man to "medicate" himself by running (so many use alcohol or dangerous drugs). I am in awe of him and could well imagine it could work and what beautiful scenery. Not an option for me unfortunately, or even a possibility at my age! and too many responsibilities to go running out into the blue yonder but great to watch and admire. Thank you for that Caroline, very empowering
